I rented a car through kayak which then…

I rented a car through kayak which then ended up going through carrentals.com. I prepaid for the car and arrived on the same day - just late due to flights and my car was not available. They would not refund me because I was late to pick up car.

Customer service was atrocious over phone - just referring to contract that ‘not entitled to a refund as I showed up late’. It was the same day and I prepaid for the car. Could not escalate to manager on phone and referred to website for complaints. Filed complaint and got an email 3 weeks later in response.

Terrible, do no trust details in website booking

Terrible experience; when I checked out their website explicitly said I would be charged $0 for extra mileage. I took a screenshot of this as well to be sure. When I paid for my rental, I was then charged several hundred dollars for extra mileage. CarRentals.com would not honor nor reimburse me for this, saying that somewhere in the details of the agreement I signed I was subject to being charged for extra mileage. They refused to acknowledge that their own website had made a clear statement I would *not* be charged, and had no interest in honoring that statement.

Selling rentals without insurance

Selling rentals without insurance. Just turned up at Athens to collect my car from Thrifty and they tell me the price doesn't include any insurance at all. Find it hard to understand in a loud airport surrounded by crying babies and barking dogs and they go on to very condescendly explain that I'll be 100% liable for all damage to the car if I hire it without paying more for insurance. So now I'm sat with no car in the airport trying to figure out what to do.

Mislead on collision and mislead on currency

Purchased collision upfront with carrentals.com. We decided to make a change on the reservation when we picked up our car. Change in driver but technically we used the same reservation details. First problem:
1) the entire purchase was in USD but this wasn't clear to me. My currency is CAD so when i was comparing prices online, I thought this quote was CAD. So in essence when converted, they weren't any cheaper than competitors in CAD currency. Second problem: 2) I was told by National that in order to change the driver, i need to buy their collision. I already paid for the collision on carrentals.com. National told me that I could not transfer my prepaid collision but i can get a refund from carrentals.com. Carrentals.com requested my rental agreement in order for them to give me a refund. Now they say they can't give a refund on collision because the rental already occurred. Carrentals says they can only give a refund BEFORE the reservation. Why would i pay for two collision fees before a rental occurs. This decision was made at the time of pick up.

9 months of bad customer support

They gave me the wrong car, a massive bus. Then they wrote e-mails back and forth with me for 9 months pretending they would make it right, told me they sent a refund but did not, and then continued to string me along. DO NOT RENT via CARRENTALS.COM.

Car rentals.com should be illegal.

I used rentalcars.com online from France in order to rent a car in the US. I paid 800 dollars weeks
In advance but was still told by Budget that I needed to pay a 250 dollar deposit to get the car. What
I learned is that the kind of deposits we pay in Europe on our credit cards are not the same as thise
In the US. Despite telling Budget simply to take the 250 as a fee which they refused to do nothing worked.
As I was going to lose all 800 I emailed rentalcars.com to ask for half my money back but they insisted
That I call instead. I had a US simcard in my phone that did not call the UK and my French card only works in Europe.
Consumer protection laws are weak in the UK where rentalcars.com is located. So I lost my 800 and
Never got the car. It cannot possibly be legal even in the UK to ignore email requests. No one from
Continental Europe should ever rent from rentalcars.com and should go directly through the car rentals
Companies or Turo. Fortunately my vacation was saved by Uber.

Had a rental car booked at Launceston…

Had a rental car booked at Launceston airport we were due to arrive at 7 30pm our flight was delayed twice,so called phone number(which is automated text response) for arrival time we were told that office closes at 9pm and we can collect the car at 8am the next morning. The 3 of us tried calling the office phone number till 9pm with no answer. So there answer wait till morning ridiculous. Website said that if you had paid and then cancelled you would get a credit. So I cancelled and then had to find another rental company. Luckily 1 car left with 3 hours notice. So I DO NOT recommend this dodgy car rental company. They don't answer phone calls and don't give credit for no customer service whatsoever. I rate these people not even 1 star

Basically a scam

Customer service is not really service. All works well until you need something and then they tell you heaps of lies and manipulations to avoid any responsibility. Their service people probably got a special bonus because they managed to avoid refunding me for a rental I didn't even execute. Beware and don't be misled by the cheaper prices. It becomes very expensive when you need them.
BTW, I didn't even book directly with them - booking.com uses them as a sub-contractor and you will be stuck with their scam without even knowing it.

This is a bad site

Tried to cancel my reservation and never get response. They just circulate your contact back and forth. They just want to steal your money.

They took your money refused to give a refund even thought you're not rental any car.,

I booked a car from car rentals to Zezgo They asked to purchase they insurance, even thought you already have your own insurance if refuse to do so they tell you to call for refund because they know you're not going to get any refund. And when you call car rentals they played with you until they tell you no and just like that they took your money.

Back in the days they were my favorite website, they were the best, I didn't use anything else. But not anymore, they just joined the scammers and become of of them.

As many we were attracted to book a car hire via Rentalcars.com for their interesting prices. That was a mistake! Booking the car was user friendly but when it came to making the payment problems started. Booking from Europe our bank initially blocked the payment as they thought it was a fraudulent transaction. After several tries our payment succeeded but the app still showed that booking was not confirmed and we didn't receive any confirmation by email within reasonable time after trying to make the booking. As we needed a car we made other arrangements locally. 3 days before the car - which believed was not booked - had to be picked up we received a mail with basic information. As we went in the rentalcars.com app the next day to check and cancel the booking it was too late (cancellation has to be at least 48 hours before pick up) and the cancellation fee was the total amount (in line with their T&Cs). What looked as a good deal ended up to be a terrible one. I wrote the customer service and send them all the screen shots to proof the apparent bug in the system but they were very unhelpful and just referred to T&Cs. Be careful.

Answer This Question

Q:

Is CarRentals.com a scam or a legit company?

A:

Definitely a scam! I spoke with customer service and made changes and now they are saying they have no record I spoke with them. But they did have just enough record to charge me the extended day, just not enough record to cancel the insurance like I had asked…

A:

Oh absolutely including their suppliers. Never again and will put the word out about this BS

by Herman Hanson - July 06, 2021

A:

Scam, don't rent from there. I just got scammed from them for the last time. Their favorite rental car "agency" that they want to promote is the biggest scammers of all "u-save"
